The "carved mates" are pieces of handicraft made of a fruit called "calabaza".
These products are elaborated in a little town called Cochas which is located in Huancayo-Junin in the central part of Perú
The instrument used to elaborate this type of handicraft is the "burin" and the tecnique is called "burilado"
The artisans made the scarved mates with diferent designs.
Two centuries before the appearance of Christ in the West, the carved gourd was used by pre - Hispanic cultures in the North coast of Peru. They were used so much with utilitarian aims as ceremonial, of course, that these varied according to the time and the traditions.
